Self-Custody vs Leaving Crypto on an Exchange

A guide that explains when exchange custody is acceptable, when a hardware wallet becomes rational, and what extra responsibility self-custody creates.

MethodologyDisclosure

  • Exchange custody is easier, but it keeps counterparty risk in the picture.
  • A hardware wallet only makes sense once the custody tradeoff is clear and the owner can handle the extra responsibility.

Ledger

Best fit for self-custody and moving assets off exchanges.

Hardware-wallet and self-custody ecosystem for investors moving meaningful crypto off exchanges and taking key management seriously.

Trezor

Best fit for open-source self-custody and long-term coin storage.

Open-source hardware-wallet platform for investors who want offline key storage and a cleaner long-term self-custody setup.

Trezor does not generate returns itself; it helps preserve them by taking long-term holdings out of exchange custody and putting control back with the owner.

The real tradeoff

Leaving crypto on an exchange is easier, faster, and often fine for small experimental balances. Self-custody becomes more rational when the position is large enough that counterparty risk starts to matter more than convenience.

The catch is simple: hardware wallets reduce custody dependence, but they increase operational responsibility. A lost seed phrase or sloppy verification process can undo the entire point.

FAQs

What are the main risks?

Key risks include illiquidity, valuation opacity, leverage, manager execution risk, concentration, and tax complexity. The category matters, but structure and manager quality matter just as much.
